The group's story
In their own words
The village of Karmat ben Salm lies in the outskirts of Zrhoun, a city famous for its tomb of the leader of the Idrisid dynasty. The area is a mountainous region famous for its agriculture and animal husbandry. Due to the conservative traditions of the village, many women are prevented from their husbands from leaving their homes.
These women, however, possess impressive skills in embroidery, and wanted to be productive members of the community. Feeling stuck, the women of the village came together in 2010 to empower themselves and created Cooperative Al Amal, lead by president Najat Al Wakily. The women now work together to teach each other embroidery and earn meaningful income.

Meet the makers
The people behind every piece
Fatima Bl Chehab
Fatima was born in Karmat Ben Salm and has lived there her entire life. She has been taking part in local literacy classes where she has benefited greatly. Fatima learned the craft of embroidery from her friends in the village, as the skill of embroidery is taught from one person to the next, creating a community where the women are able to teach each other new and improved embroidery skills.
Malika Al Wakily
Malika was born in Karmat Ben Salm and has lived there her entire life. She is 27 years old and is not married and has never been able to attend school. Malika works to assist her families financial needs, and was able to learn embroidery from her sister Najat, the president of the cooperative.
Monia Al Wakily
Monia was born in 1975 in Karmat Ben Salm and has lived there all her life. She was able to attend school through the fifth grade, and learned the craft of embroidery from her family. Monia works to develop the craft along side her sisters, who are also members of the cooperative
Khadija
Khdija was born in 1973 in Karmat Ben Salm and married the brother of the Al Wakily sisters. Khdija has two children and was able to learn the craft of embroidery from the Al Wakily family.
