ABOUT THIS RESIDENCY
Afous Gafous is the first artisan-led residency in the Anou network. Drawing on what they've learned hosting residents at Anou's HQ in Fez, the cooperative is now opening their own workshop to weavers and makers who want to learn directly from them.
ROOM & BOARD
Residents stay with the family of an Afous Gafous artisan, in a private room within their home. The setup is basic but welcoming — expect simple, comfortable accommodation and home-cooked meals shared with the family. Living alongside your hosts is part of the experience: a window into village life and the rhythms that shape the work.
THE EXPERIENCE
Residents work alongside Afous Gafous artisans through the full arc of rug-making: preparing and dyeing the wool, spinning it into yarn, and weaving on the loom. Each stage is taught hands-on, at the pace of the workshop. For those interested, there's also the chance to learn Moroccan cooking with the family — making bread, tagines, and the daily meals that anchor village life.
THE VILLAGE
Afous Gafous is based in Lamdint, a small village on the road that links Marrakesh and Ouarzazate as it winds through the High Atlas. The setting is rural and quiet — wide skies, mountain views, and the rhythms of a working agricultural community. Its position on the main route makes it surprisingly easy to reach, with Marrakesh a few hours one way and Ouarzazate and the desert beyond in the other.
